Beaufort Wind Scale

The Beaufort Scale, used throughout the marine world, has developed over many years since it was first devised by Admiral Francis Beaufort in 1806. Today, the Beaufort scale is defined for seamen in terms of sea state.  Its emphasis is more on the observed effect of the wind, rather than the actual wind speed.

Beaufort Number Description Wind Speed Wave Height Sea Conditions Land Conditions
mph km/h kts m ft
0Calm< 1< 1< 100FlatCalm. Smoke rises vertically
1Light air1 - 31.1 - 5.51 - 20 - 0.20 - 1Ripples without crestsWind motion visible in smoke
2Light breeze4 - 75.6 - 113 - 60.2 - 0.51 - 2Small wavelets. Crests of glassy appearance, not breakingWind felt on exposed skin. Leaves rustle
3Gentle breeze8 - 1212 - 197 - 100.5 - 12 - 3.5Large wavelets. Crests begin to break; scattered whitecapsLeaves and smaller twigs in constant motion
4Moderate breeze13 - 1720 - 2811 - 151 - 23.5 - 6Small waves with breaking crests. Fairly frequent white horsesDust and loose paper raised. Small branches begin to move
5Fresh breeze18 - 2429 - 3816 - 202 - 36 - 9Moderate waves of some length. Many white horses. Small amounts of sprayBranches of a moderate size move. Small trees begin to sway
6Strong breeze25 - 3039 - 4921 - 263 - 49 - 13Long waves begin to form. White foam crests are very frequent. Some airborne spray is presentLarge branches in motion. Whistling heard in overhead wires. Umbrella use becomes difficult. Empty plastic rubbish bins tip over
7High wind, moderate gale, near gale31 - 3850 - 6127 - 334 - 5.513 - 19Sea heaps up. Some foam from breaking waves is blown into streaks along wind direction. Moderate amounts of airborne sprayWhole trees in motion. Effort needed to walk against the wind. Swaying of skyscrapers may be felt, especially by people on upper floors.
8Gale, fresh gale39 - 4662 - 7434 - 405.5 - 7.517.2 - 20.7Moderately high waves with breaking crests forming spindrift. Well-marked streaks of foam are blown along wind direction. Considerable airborne spraySome twigs broken from trees. Cars veer on road. Progress on foot is seriously impeded
9Strong gale47 - 5475 - 8841 - 477 - 1023 - 32High waves whose crests sometimes roll over. Dense foam is blown along wind direction. Large amounts of airborne spray may begin to reduce visibilitySome branches break off trees, and some small trees blow over. Construction/temporary signs and barricades blow over. Damage to circus tents and canopies blow over
10Storm, whole gale55 - 6389 - 10248 - 559 - 12.529 - 41Very high waves with overhanging crests. Large patches of foam, driven before the wind, cover much of the sea surface. Very large amounts of airborne spray reduce visibilityTrees are broken off or uprooted, saplings bent and deformed. Poorly attached asphalt shingles and shingles in poor condition peel off roofs
11Violent storm64 - 72103 - 11756 - 6311.5 - 1637 - 52Exceptionally high waves. Very large patches of foam, driven before the wind, cover much of the sea surface. Very large amounts of airborne spray severely reduce visibilityWidespread damage to vegetation. Many roofing surfaces are damaged; asphalt tiles that have curled up and/or fractured due to age may break away completely
12Hurricane≥ 73≥ 118≥ 64≥ 17≥ 53Huge waves. Sea is completely white with foam and spray. Air is filled with driving spray, greatly reducing visibilityVery widespread damage to vegetation. Some windows may break; mobile homes and poorly constructed sheds and barns are damaged. Debris may be hurled about
